Snowshoeing and Winter Hiking
Nature lovers don’t have to halt their outdoor adventures because there’s snow on the ground. There are several awesome trails in Janesville that are open for winter hiking and snowshoeing! Check out a few trails here!
Cross-country skiing is a great way to stay active and experience the outdoors during the winter months. Rockport Park offers more than 6 miles of cross-country skiing trails, while Rock County parks like Magnolia Bluff, Gibbs Lake and Carver-Roehl . Learn more at the Janesville Visitors Bureau website!
Ice fishing is a great with for anglers to hook fish during winter. There are quite a few lakes that permit ice fishing in Rock County when the ice is thick enough to be safe. Janesville offers a few local ice skating rinks for residents to enjoy. The closest to home is the Janesville Ice Arena, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, open skating is currently closed to the public. Luckily, Janesville skaters can visit Traxler Park for some quality outdoor ice skating. Additionally, Rockford Park District’s Carlson Ice Area offers public skating sessions, lessons, hockey leagues and more.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding
While there are no commercial alpine skiing hills in Janesville, a short road trip can bring skiers and snowboarders to a few places to shred the gnar. Just about 45 minutes from Janesville is the Apline Valley Ski Resort, which has about 10 trails, seven lifts, learn to ski and snowboard lessons and a designated area for beginners. Other alpine ski hills within a reasonable distance include Wilmont Mountain Ski Resort and Mountain Top at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa.
