During the car-buying process, there are a plethora of factors and things to look for in a vehicle to determine if its right for you. However, the most important thing, above all else, is safety. If you can’t trust a vehicle to keep you safe, then that vehicle isn’t worth buying. With that in mind, what are the safest Toyota models available?
A great barometer for a vehicle’s safety is its rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS researches and tests every vehicle to gauge how safe it is, and only the best and safest receive their coveted “TOP SAFETY PICK” or “TOP SAFETY PICK+”. They release all their top picks for each vehicle category every year, and 2017 saw nine Toyota models picked by the IIHS for their safety, beating out competitors like Ford, Chevrolet and Nissan.
Here are the winners, organized into whether they received the IIHS “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” and in which category of vehicle they fall under.
IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK
“To qualify for 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.”-IIHS
